Best of Bristol 2017: Theatre
1. How to Win Against History, Wardrobe Theatre
Nov 2-11
Seiriol Davies’ musical about the short, intense life of Henry Cyril Paget, the cross-dressing fifth Marquis of Anglesey, was a hilarious, poignant and very sparkly tale of a life less ordinary.

2. Ice Road, Jacob’s Wells Baths
Oct 2-Nov 19
Site-specific maestros Raucous enacted the Siege of Leningrad in the cavernous Jacob’s Wells Baths. “A fine display of theatre’s unique ability to use words, lights, sound and the audience’s imagination to create a world which is both tangible and affecting out of a few scaffolding poles and some fake snow.”
3. Junkyard, Bristol Old Vic
Feb 24-March 18
“Telling the story of a ragtag bunch of troubled teenagers growing up in Lockleaze in the 1970s, Junkyard is based on the writer’s father’s real-life experiences of constructing an adventure playground with a group of disillusioned and marginalised local teens. Who knew a story so simple could be so hilarious, moving and enthralling?”
4. Beauty and the Beast, Tobacco Factory Theatres
Until Jan 14 2018
“When something is truly beauteous on the inside in the theatre – in content, intention, style, performance, direction, music, words and design – that inner ‘beauty’ manifests outwardly as a truly cogent, charming and beautiful piece of work, which this show is.”
5. Education, Education, Education, Bristol Old Vic
Nov 1-4
The Wardrobe Ensemble’s nostalgic look back at the sense of hope that flowed through the education sector after Tony Blair’s 1997 election was “fast-paced, highly entertaining – and very, very funny. It also makes you stop, think, and sigh wistfully when we’re reminded of the path our education system has taken since.”
