Bristol Old Vic industry day will highlight opportunities for people working in theatre

By Sarski Anderson  Tuesday Feb 6, 2024

Following on from the UK’s National Careers Week (March 4-9), Bristol Old Vic will be hosting a free industry morning on March 18, aimed at young people aged 15-19 who are interested in finding out about how a theatre is run.

Artistic director Nancy Medina will be giving a keynote welcome to participants, after which the event will be a chance to discover “who works behind the curtain, how did they end up here, and what do they actually do every day?”

A range of people from front of house, backstage and communications will be on hand to introduce their roles: including technicians, marketeers, fundraisers, event managers, actors, directors and producers.

The initiative is running as part of the BBC’s Bring the Drama Festival, a six-week programme of events aiming to inspire the next generation of behind-the-scenes talent in theatre, film and TV, as well as widening access to opportunities and training.

Theatres and cultural institutions across the country will be participating in the scheme, and hopes are high that the current shortfall in available crew (most apparent in lighting, sound, stage management, hair and makeup and wardrobe) will be shored up in future.

“There is so much talent across Britain and making world-class movies, TV shows and theatre is one of our greatest global exports,” says Suzy Klein, head of arts TV at the BBC.

“Working with more than 150 partner organisations, the Festival promises to lure in the next generation of brilliant creatives.”

Bring The Drama: Industry Day (for ages 15-19) is at Bristol Old Vic on March 18 from 9.45am-1pm. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance at www.bristololdvic.org.uk.
