Bristol Shakespeare Festival is back for 2022
Now back for its 19th year, Bristol Shakespeare Festival is once more gathering touring and home-grown theatre companies for a season of The Bard in numerous venues city-wide.
The celebration opens with the festival’s signature high octane, maximum silliness in-house show, Julius Caesar the Musical on July 14-16 – which if previous productions are anything to go by, will be expected to sell out early.
In two very different productions of As You Like It, all female and non-binary-led Apricity Theatre bring their playful contemporary, and gender-questioning production to the festival, only a few days before The Lord Chamberlain’s Men present their traditional, all-male, and very funny version.

Organisers say: “these two productions showcase the potential of Shakespeare’s writing to entertain and provoke, four-and-a-quarter centuries after they were written”.
Book-ending August, there are contrasting takes on Much Ado About Nothing, too, from Folksy Theatre and Sun and Moon Theatre respectively.
The Scullions bring Queen Lear, their gender-reversed staging of one of the Bard’s most famous tragedies, and Fire and Air Theatre fuse A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Macbeth into the all-new mash-up, A Moving Grove.

For drama students as well as those inspired to try acting for the first time, the festival will include Shakespeare and voice acting workshops; there will also be creative sessions laid on for those under 11.
The festival promises to be a rich and varied celebration that will delight existing fans of Shakespeare, while making new ones.
