Bristol theatre Fringe trilogy ends with one-woman drama ‘Mother’
Bristol writer David Martin of Softsod Productions has been writing the story of his protagonist, Molly, for seven years.
Following on from Fragile Man (2017) and UnSpoken (2018), he has now completed a trilogy of shows with the one-woman play Mother, which is going up to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2024.
Described as an “intensely emotional, fast-paced and unsettling” story of love, and loss, Mother is performed by Emma Smart, reprising the role of Molly.

Martin’s writing is informed by his real-world experiences of working with sufferers of trauma and detachment, and he aims to imbue his characters with all the complexity and nuance, humour and sadness of life.
Softsod Productions is currently running a crowdfunder to help meet the cost of taking the show up to Edinburgh.
Following the Fringe run, Martin is keen to tour an extended version of Mother, before combining all three shows into a single extended version of Molly’s story. “Netflix beware!”, he warns.
