Hippodrome to host ambitious ‘Les Misérables’ 40th anniversary community project
In celebration of the seminal and international musical sensation Les Misérables reaching its 40th anniversary, local theatre companies including Bristol’s BLOC Productions have been invited to participate in the UK-wide project led by Cameron Mackintosh and Musical International, Let The People Sing.
With a rich 90-year history, BLOC Productions have garnered a well-deserved reputation for the quality, passion and entertainment value of their work.
Representing the south west region, BLOC will be joining with Weston Operatic Society, Bath Operatic & Dramatic Society, Bristol Amateur Operatic Society and Bristol Musical Comedy Club in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stage the Boublil and and Schönberg show at Bristol Hippodrome in the summer of 2025.

Eight performances will take place over five days, from August 12-16. Details for open auditions are set to be announced in July, with organisers expecting a huge degree of interest from the local theatre community.
For Philip Hallworth, Chair of BLOC Productions, it represents something of a ‘pinch me’ moment. “We are all honoured and excited to have this wonderful opportunity to bring the phenomenon that is Les Misérables home to Bristol!” he admits.
“The production has famously never been released for adult amateur companies due to its ongoing success in the West End and on tour, so we are delighted to be able to bring this bucket list opportunity to local performers, with the support and guidance of the show’s West End and international associate creative teams as we prepare our non-replica, original production of the show.”
