Nudgement Day: a comedy about ‘standing up to levelling down’ in Weston-super-Mare

By Sarski Anderson  Wednesday May 1, 2024

Me Monster is a theatre company comprised of performers and creatives who trained in Weston-super-Mare, and continue to live and work in the town.

Since forming, they have continued to work closely with Front Room, Weston’s innovative fringe theatre which has been newly shortlisted for Mission Possible: the best social enterprise at the 2024 Small Awards.

Their eponymous debut, Me, Monster? (2022) was the first show ever to be performed at the venue.

Since that time, they have created a Christmas production, The Shaggy Dog Tale (2023), a monthly cabaret called From The Mud, and regular comedy night Weston-super-LAUGH.

Funded by Arts Council England, their newest creation Nudgement Day is described as a silly, satirical exploration of “the relationship between power and intention, media and public opinion, and two friends driven apart by their duty to their community”.

Following a performance at Front Room in March, the show is coming to Bristol, visiting The Alma Theatre on May 23 for a three night run.

Look at the cities. Full of hopes, dreams, and shops. Now look at your town. Run-down. Deserted. Not like the good old days. It needs a good pep. That’s why we here at the ministry are getting ready to give you and your seaside town a loving “nudge” in the right direction. The sea.

Following newly elected local MP, Lisa, and her recently defeated opponent, Martin, the story follows a “bonkers” scheme to reinvent Weston, as the event garners celebrity endorsement, merch and a merciless brand of tourism that swarms around the dying moments of a town.

“Buckle up for a tale of chaos, revolution and the final days of the seaside… before it gets pushed into the sea by a giant bulldozer.”
