Review: Me, Tobacco Factory Theatres – ‘Simple perfection for little theatre goers’
Emma Dodd’s picture book Me follows a baby penguin who feels small in the face of the world around them.
The landscape, the weather, the seasons, and the sky: here is a bird who could be easily overwhelmed in the face of the vast, ever-changing and baffling world that surrounds them.
However, the love and security of parental love afforded to this little penguin is a constant that enables them to grow and to learn.
is needed now More than ever
In a heartwarming adaptation by Little Angel Theatre, aimed at the very youngest of theatregoers (aged 2+), the story is brought to life in a beautifully designed show featuring penguin puppets that would melt even the hardest of hearts.
Bristol theatremaker and producer Tessa Bide is both performer and puppeteer here, and Oliver Hymans directs (though the original director was Samantha Lane).
A versatile musical score by Arran Glass ranges from clarinet to stirring strings and acapella movements, underpinning the changing conditions on the ice.
It’s a fine example of the simplicity and magic inherent in every successful Christmas show and a perfect introduction to theatre.
Moreover, at only 40 minutes, Me keeps even the littlest audience members rapt throughout.
Me (age recommendation 2+) is at Tobacco Factory Theatres on December 5-January 5; showtimes vary. Tickets are available at www.tobaccofactorytheatres.com.
