Bristol Festival of Ideas, the city’s unofficial third university, continues not only to showcase some of the most interesting and thought-provoking writers on the planet – a highlight of this year was Senator Bernie Sanders at St George’s – but also, via seasonal offshoots like the Festival of the Future City, to tackle some of the most urgent problems and debates facing the human race.

May 26

Dot To Dot has come to represent the beginning of summer, and the first chance to dart around the centre sinking a few beers while catching some great bands. Despite a lineup which mainly pleases alternative indie fans, they always show us a good time by bringing in a load of quality local names in.

5. Hoo-Ha!, Colston Hall
August 16-20

This year’s festival once again saw the whole of the Colston Hall taken over with family-friendly events, with highlights including an inflatable planetarium in the foyer, CBeebies’ Andy Day in the main hall and mermaids on the terrace. Hoo-Ha has become an annual highlight for anyone looking to entertain their children during the summer holidays.
