New boss for St Paul’s Carnival

By Bristol24/7  Sunday Apr 28, 2019

The former head of operations at Ujima Radio has been named as the new executive director of St Paul’s Carnival.

Change management consultant LaToyah McAllister-Jones will be responsible for this year’s event, which is taking place on Saturday, July 6 with the theme of ‘our journey’.

LaToyah said: “St Paul’s Carnival is a vibrant expression of our city’s wonderful diversity and an event that brings dozens of communities together.

“It is a chance to celebrate both our similarities and differences which is why we felt a theme of ‘our journey’ would work so well for 2019.”

LaToyah said that the theme “fits with the ethos of carnival which is primarily a celebration of Bristol’s African-Caribbean culture but also bangs the drum for diversity and inclusivity on a wider scale”.

LaToyah and her team hope that this summer’s carnival will aim to build on last year’s 50th anniversary celebrations which saw the event return after a three-year absence.

In 2018, some 100,000 people descended on St Paul’s for the procession and to enjoy the stages and sound systems.

Organisers created a legacy and education programme involving schools across the city as well as local businesses.

The theme for this year’s event will aim chart the challenges faced by the Windrush generation from the 1940s to the present day, reflecting the subsequent challenges faced including racism and inequality leading to the Bristol bus boycott and the subsequent contribution to the city from Caribbean music, food, tradition, skills, dance and more.
