Preview: Green Man 2018

By Ellie Pipe  Friday Aug 17, 2018

Barely more than an hour drive from Bristol, Green Man is like a gateway to another world.

Deep in the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains provide a stunning backdrop to this understated festival that has grown a loyal following over the course of its 16-year history – and tickets for 2018 sold out in record time.

Fleet Foxes, The War On Drugs and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are among the headliners this year.

Green Man is fiercely proud of its Welsh roots and showcases an array of local talent across its stages, including Cate Le Bon – in her only festival performance this year, 9Bach and plenty of emerging talent, with the likes of Adwaith and BITW on the Rising stage.

But this is a festival about far more than the musical lineup, with plenty of hidden gems to be discovered throughout the weekend – be they the scientific wonders of Einstein’s Garden, the vast array of craft Welsh ales on offer, a chance to rewind in the Nature Nurture paddock, or late-night revelry in the Far Out Tent.

The Last Laugh comedy stage boasts performances from Phil Wang, Rob Deering, Pat Cahill, Bec Hill, Stuart Laws, Lloyd Griffith and Annie Mcgrath, among others, while renowned DJ Annie Nightingale opens up about her impressive career in Talking Shop.

As per tradition, the festival will close with a bang on the Sunday night, when crowds can gather to watch the Green Man effigy set alight in the midst of a grand firework finale.

Refreshingly free from commercial influence, with a strong green ethos and a charity arm, The Green Man Trust, this is a feel-good festival in more ways than one.
