Preview: The Big Gorgeous Festival 2019

The Big Gorgeous Festival returns on Saturday, July 27, with a eclectic lineup of acts, all performing overlooking the Avon Gorge on one of Clifton’s most historic terraces.

Eight acts will perform to just 400 attendees – the maximum number of people allowed onto Windsor Terrace, originally built at the start of the 1790s.

With acts including Lonely Tourist, soul band The LBJBs, ska nine-piece Mad Apple Circus and the Bristol Ensemble, the one-day festival is set to celebrate some great Bristol bands and musicians.

The LBJBs will perform on Saturday

A mixture of non-Bristolian musicians join the lineup, including calypso-cum-reggae band Kabo Town, singer-songwriter Daisy Chapman and Mike Crawford and the Various Sorrows, a rock and roll band.

The eighth act is made up of of Zimbabwean Chartwell Dutiro and mbira-playing Jori Buchel, who the festival claim will be playing “mystical mbira music”.

For children, there will be a KidsCre8 station and Bristol Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art.

A range of foods are will be available too. The Smoked Vegan, Wild Pizza Co. and the Tia Julia, usually based in St Nick’s, are all catering. The Ice Cream Box will also be there for a helping hand to cool off.

This year, the festival is helping to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and Caring in Bristol, a charity that supports those experiencing homelessness.

Now in its third year, the Big Gorgeous Festival is a celebration of music and Bristol, with organiser Dan Cliberey’s late father having been a Bristol musician himself before succumbing to cancer.

Places are limited and tickets can be only bought in person from either the Bristol Ticket Shop near St Nick’s Market or Portabella in Clifton. Tickets are £15 plus booking fee and £5 for children aged five to 15.
