How St Paul’s Carnival was saved

By Bristol24/7  Wednesday Jul 25, 2018

A documentary on Wednesday night takes a warts-and-all look at the trials and tribulations of putting on St Paul’s Carnival in its 50th anniversary year.

The BBC were given exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the new team in charge of bringing the carnival back as they battled to resurrect the event after it had not been hosted for three years.

Cameras see the team facing the challenge of keeping residents on side and to find someone to make scores of flamboyant costumes from scratch and on budget.

The film, made by Michael Jenkins and Luke David, explores the rich history and tradition of the carnival.

It also includes some rarely seen archive footage as well as interviews with the founders of the first event in 1968.

Saving Carnival is on BBC One (West) on Wednesday, July 25 at 7.30pm
