Emmeline – cafe review

By Martin Booth  Tuesday May 10, 2016

Emmeline has appeared on Cheltenham Road with little fanfare but will undoubtedly soon be clogging up your Instagram feeds.

This is a cafe-cum-florist geared up for takeaway breakfasts and lunches of sandwiches, salads and wraps that can be ordered along with your coffee to go through a hatch that opens onto the pavement.

Emmeline has flowers for sale by The Mighty Quinns adding splashes of colour from the white walls. This used to be Shop Dutty before they upped sticks a few hundred metres away to Stokes Croft and changed their name to That Thing.

Displayed on a counter opposite the flowers are cakes made by a friend of the owner Shona (formerly of Yurt Lush) and pastries made by Farro Bakery which includes an excellent canele. Hopefully soon they will sell khoune annans beloved of London cafes and which Farro have previously sold at markets.

There’s a contrast between these cakes and healthy smoothies of frozen banana, agave, almond milk and cacao, and juices from a selection of courgette, pear, kale, cucumber, ginger and spirulina.

Sitting inside on a small wooden bench, I enjoyed a croissant with ham and cheese, put under the grill before being served.

Small but perfectly formed, Emmeline is set to entice those who love flowers and want quick healthy food and drink to take away, as well as those whose Instagram game is strong.
