Este – cafe review

By Martin Booth  Friday Apr 15, 2016

‘Made with love’ is the tagline of Este on Greenbank Road just around the corner from the Greenbank pub and a few doors up from Matter Wholefoods. This small cafe is certainly lovely, occupying a corner site flooded with natural light.

Breakfast and brunch are served from 9am to midday, from Hart’s Bakery pastries to a full English.

A Latin street food-themed lunch sees empanadas available from 12.30pm, all costing £6.50 and containing chicken, beef, or the veggie option of wilted spinach and Feta cheese. There are also salad bowls and daily specials such as Brazilian coxinhas – chalked up on the blackboard as “little bundles of chicken joy”.

Drinks include coffee from Extract, a selection of Pukka herbal teas, Colombian hot chocolate, and smoothies with intriguing additions such as frozen kale and bee pollen.

Splashes of colour are everywhere you look in Este

On a recent Friday morning, one customer was tucking into his full English breakfast with spicy ketchup while engrossed in a magazine – okay, it was Bristol24/7 magazine but we don’t like to brag.

A group of decorators came in shortly before midday in paint-splattered overalls and sat on a table in the corner, black coffees all round.

“I like this place all the more because they don’t serve baked beans,” one said as they perused the menu.

My granola was delicious, made with chia seeds and served with a generous dollop of Greek yogurt and honey.

Inside, like the recently opened Kale & Kettle on Stokes Croft, it’s a veritable Instagrammers paradise with no filters required: tiny flower boxes on one wooden feature wall, whitewash elsewhere, exposed brass piping, white tiles behind the counter, cushions made out of old hessian coffee bags and yellow tea pots.

So the smaller visitors don’t feel left out, there are piles of colouring pages with the pencils kept in two children’s welly boots. There’s also a sharpener, a crucial implement often missing elsewhere.

This new addition to the BS5 neighbourhood is an absolute delight. It’s very easy to fall in love with Este.
