The Colombian Company comes to Clifton

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Jun 25, 2019

Vines hang down from the ceiling at The Colombian Company, a new cafe and shop on the corner of Whiteladies Road and Cotham Hill.

It’s the second Colombian Company to be opened by Jhampoll Gutierrez Gomez following the original in Bath, with Colombian food, drink and other assorted products available to buy to have in or take home.

In what used to be Chandos Deli and then a cafe called Bristol Coffee House owned by the same company, a reminder of even older days is in a mosaic in front of the entrance spelling out Carwardine’s, a centuries-old coffee company.

The cultural provenance of its latest incarnation cannot be missed, with sugar on every table in what look like miniature oil drums painted in the yellow, blue and red of the Colombian flag, and Spanish language songs on the stereo.

On the large counter are a variety of sweet treats including custard tarts, Portuguese muffins, and a Colombian coffee and walnut cake; with an option of half a dozen cheese toasties to eat in or take away.

A handwritten sign above its door also reveals that ‘Latin beers’ are for sale, which on closer inspection inside reveals the likes of Mahou from Spain and Polar from Venezuela – two classics in their respective home countries in a cafe and shop justifiably proud of its South American heritage.
