The best free and family-friendly events at Food Connections 2018
Bristol Food Connections, the citywide celebration of Bristol’s food and drink scene, is back for 2018 running from June 11-17 with more than 130 events taking place.
This year’s festival aims to provide something for everyone, getting as many people out and about, exploring all that Bristol has to offer, including a number of fantastic free and family-friendly events:
THE TRAVELLING KITCHEN: A PICNIC THROUGH TIME
is needed now More than ever
• All week with a final picnic at 3pm on June 14 at the Greenway Centre & Café
• Join a week-long series of workshops from Travelling Kitchen, along with community groups in Southmead, hosted by Badock’s Wood Primary School, the Greenway Centre and the Woodnook.
• The event will culminate with a celebratory ‘Picnic Through Time’ at The Greenway Centre, with visitors coming together to eat the dishes that reflect the history and community of Southmead from the 1930’s to the present day.

COOKING WITH THE SEASONS FOR YOUR FAMILY
• June 14, 3pm, Bristol Energy Hub, Waterfront
• Hear from Wizzy, who heads up Sky Kong Kong, with many of the dishes featuring vegetables from her own allotment
• During this 45-minute talk and taster session, Wizzy will be teaching the home cook to use the seasons whilst cooking, in order to enhance your health.

AFTERNOON TEA BAKE-OFF
• June 15, 11am, St Stephen’s Cafe, St Stephen’s Church
• Come and join The Brandon Trust for their very special afternoon tea-off. The people that the Brandon Trust support have been invited to enter the competition to create their own afternoon tea, and you’re invited to watch the judging. You’ll also be able to sample tasters of the delicious goodies which contestants bake.

APPLE PRESSING WITH THE CIDER BOX
• June 13, 12.30pm, Bristol Energy Hub, Waterfront
• Come and make your own apple juice at this free event with The Cider Box, leaders of the craft cider movement. Learn about – and help crush and press – apples into fine tasting fresh apple juice to quench your thirst. Learn about the magic and importance of our great orchards and the beauty of the apple, while tasting the fruits of your labour. A delicious and interactive way to connect ourselves to our greatest export – the apple.

SURPLUS FOOD WORKSHOP WITH FOODCYCLE AND FEEDBACK
• June 16, 10am, Barton Hill Settlement
• The workshops will use food that would have been wasted and will focus on reducing food waste and cooking easy, quick, healthy vegetarian meals.
• Come along at any time between 10am-5pm to take part, enjoy a free meal and take home a recipe booklet which includes the dishes you’ve cooked.

COMMUNITY PIZZA PARTY
• June 15, 10.30am, outdoor barn kitchen, Windmill Hill City Farm
• If you’re over 55, come and join the children from Victoria Park Primary school for a multigenerational pizza decorating competition.
• Adults and children will team up to create their own pizza masterpieces which will then be cooked in an outdoor, wood fired pizza oven. After the judging everyone will be able chow down and enjoy the tastes of their hard work.

GROWING TOGETHER: EASTON GARDEN PARTY
• June 16, midday, Owen Square Park
• The Network and Karam Kitchen invite residents of Easton to come together for a special day of sharing food, getting those hands dirty and finding out more about our food systems, both on a local and a global scale.
• The event will feature a mixture of workshops, demonstrations and delicious food, and is open to everyone.
• Karam Kitchen is a collective of Syrian Refugee women who provide support to new Syrian Families, which will be launching their new community kitchen at the event.

PICNIC ON SEVERN BEACH
• June 15, 11am, Bristol Temple Meads
• Take your little ones for a lovely day out on Severn Beach during this event from the Severnside Community Rail Project.
• After meeting at the main entrance to the railway station at 11am, you’ll set off on the 11.16 train from Bristol Temple Meads, free of charge. The train will then head to Severn Beach, where you and your little one will be dropped off, along with a free healthy children’s picnic to enjoy on the beach.
• All you need to do is make sure you’re back at Severn Beach station for the 13.56 train back to Temple Meads.

BRISTOL’S YOUNG CHEF DEMO: COOKING WITH ANOUK TRETHOWAN
• June 17, 3pm, Bristol Energy Hub, Waterfront
• Join Anouk, winner of Bristol’s 2017 Healthy Schools Young Chef awards, for a cookery demonstration on the last day of the festival.
• Anouk will be cooking a healthy, savoury and simple dish using local and seasonal ingredients, inspired by her family recipes.
