Eat cake and do good throughout Ramadan

By Lowie Trevena  Monday May 13, 2019

There’s not much that can top a good slice of cake. But imagine it personally delivered by friendly faces and – for the icing on top – all the money raised donated to charity.

The Cake Campaign does just that. Throughout Ramadan, their volunteers will bake and deliver a 14-slice chocolate fudge cake to raise money for Islamic Relief.

The campaign has so far sold more than 125,000 cakes across the UK and raised more than a million pounds; with all proceeds going towards supporting those in the midst of the Syrian crisis.

There isn’t an official branch of Islamic Relief in Bristol yet, but there is a dedicated Bristol team that has dozens of volunteers working to bake and deliver cakes during Ramadan.

“Islamic Relief is an international, non-governmental organisation that was initially started by a group of doctors and activists that aimed to provide aid for those in need,” said Shamphat Ahmed.

“The Cake Campaign, or #Cakes4Syria, is a brilliant initiative that supports Islamic Relief’s Syria campaign, supporting orphans, refugees or anyone else affected by the disaster in Syria.”

You can find the volunteers wearing light blue t-shirts with Lifesavers on the front. Shamphat says that they should be smiling, but adds that because they will be fasting, “do forgive us if we look a little tired or hangry!”

Last year, the Bristol team sold more than 1,400 cakes, with at least £14,000 raised for people in need.

This year, the team will be on St Mark’s Road on May 19 and June 2 with a cake stand run by secondary school student volunteers, as well as the Grand Street Iftar on May 30.

To order some cake, visit www.thecakecampaign.org or contact Shamphat on Twitter via @ShamPhat who promises to deliver cakes to any office in the city each Monday throughout the campaign.
