Asian street food group opens new site

Pocha is the fourth venture of the two man team behind Tuk Tuck and Dangun.

As Alex Slatter and Quan Cui approach the nine year anniversary of the opening of the first Tuk Tuck on St Stephen’s Street, they are now eager to expand further into the Asian street food scene in Bristol.

Located opposite Everyman Cinema on Whiteladies Road, Pocha promises to bring a fresh twist to Asian street food.

When Bristol24/7 visited on a Tuesday evening, there were many diners sitting outside and enjoying the hazy sunshine alongside their meals.

Once we entered, we immediately noticed several homages to Korean culture: from pop art to pop stars to cinema.

The dinning area at the back is spacious and adorned with posters including a poster of the Academy Award-winning movie Parasite and one of the musician Psy whose 2012 song Gagnam Style became a global hit.

The restaurant’s co-owners, Quan Cui and Alex Slatter, were inspired to bring a Korean restaurant to Whiteladies Road following a recent trip abroad.

Slatter said: “We were lucky enough to visit South Korea last year, with some of our staff members, and we were inspired by the street food market stalls, known as ‘Pojang-Macha’ and shortened to ‘Pocha’ which is where we took our name.

“These are places where people meet to eat and drink and socialise and we hope to bring the same vibe to this new restaurant.”

Pocha has a Korean inspired drinks menu – featuring a Soju Espresso Martini among others.

Although the food and drink scene in Bristol can be competitive, Slatter is confident Pocha has what it takes to stand out from its rivals.

Slatter said: “What sets us apart is our fusion range of cuisine where we have a bit of everything to suit a range of tastes.

“When we’re fully up and running we’ll have some unique items which we don’t think have been done in Bristol yet, including ‘Budae Jjigae’ a hot pot sharer or ‘Bingsu’ which is a shaved ice dessert.”

The restaurant will officially open on August 23.

Marking their “soft opening,” they are currently offering 50 per cent off their food menu until next week’s opening.
