Bokman team to open new restaurant
For several years, the owners of Bokman have been looking for a second site and now they have confirmed the location of a new restaurant called Dongnae.
Dongnae, which means ‘neighbourhood’ in Korean, will be opening within a Bristol neighbourhood already renowned for its food and drink.
The new restaurant is due to open on Chandos Road in Redland in early September, with owners Kyu Jeong Jeon and Duncan Robertson promising to “raise the bar of Korean cooking in the UK even higher with a more refined menu that draws inspiration from Kyu’s upbringing in Korea and their time spent living in Seoul as a family”.
is needed now More than ever
Dongnae will focus heavily on the fermentation elements of dishes, with Korean staples such as doenjang, gochujang and makgeolli created from scratch.
Menus will range from an à la carte with traditional barbecue to a £24 set lunch of a rice bowl, soup, side dishes and kimchi.
And there will be a hanjungshik (omakase style) priced at £55 showcasing some of the chefs’ favourite dishes including Korean beef tartare, wild mushroom dolsotbap, whelk and perilla muchim, or grilled pork jowl with various in-house condiments.

Dongnae head chef, Clarence Fung, has most recently been working as sous chef at Dovetale in Mayfair and has recently worked at Gordon Ramsay Restaurants and at Popham’s Bakery in Hackney.
General manager Rebecca Lewis is joining from the Michelin Green-starred, Where The Light Gets In in Stockport.
In a joint statement, Kyu and Duncan, who opened Bokman on Ninetree Hill off Stokes Croft in 2019, said: “Dongnae means ‘neighbourhood’ in Korean, so we feel it fits well with our great location on Chandos Road.
“It has a welcoming, comfortable and accessible connotation, which is really important to us.
“With Dongnae, we want to gently challenge the idea that all Asian cuisines are grouped together, and encourage people to come and enjoy Korean food in our version of a modern neighbourhood restaurant.
“Finally, while we want the restaurant to be warm and relaxed, we intend for the quality of the food and service to make a big impact on our guests.”
