Bristol Loaf opens its third cafe

By Estelle Nilsson-Julien  Monday Aug 9, 2021

Gary Derham opened The Bristol Loaf’s first site in Redfield in 2017 with a team of only six people.

Four years on, the bakery’s third site has been unveiled inside Bristol Beacon and is set to play a key role in reinjecting life into the building that – like so many in the city – was closed for a prolonged time due to Covid-19.

Although the Bristol Beacon has reopened, its final renovations that include the main concert hall’s refurbishment will run into 2023.

Like the other Bristol Loaf sites on Church Road in Redfield, and East Street in Bedminster, this latest cafe and bar has simple decor with plenty of natural wood and green plants throughout.

Since its launch in 2017, the business has gained a reputation for its baked goods and coffee, made by “baristas who are unbelievably nerdy about coffee,” as Gary puts it.

The new venture will also be offering brunch and lunch, followed by wine and small plates of seasonal food later in the day.

Open seven days a week, it provides food and refreshments to the public, as well as concertgoers attending the more intimate gigs currently running at the venue’s terrace and foyer.

The wine bar, currently open from Thursday to Sunday and on concert nights, will soon be open daily.

The wine is sourced from The Bristol Loaf’s sister company, Native Vine. Gary wanted to integrate Native Vine into his newest site, hosting events like cheese and wine nights where sommeliers and wine producers will “pick on obscure regions so that people can come and chat about wine”.

The Bristol Loaf is also planning collaborations with local restaurants through chef residencies and takeovers.

Native Vine will also be launching its first shop in Bristol later this year, to be located at North Point House, opposite M Shed.
