Bristol named as the world’s number one vegan city
Bristol has topped a global list as the most popular city in the world for veganism for the third year running.
Bristol came top, followed by Portland in the USA, Edinburgh and London.
The annual study conducted by food magazine Chef’s Pencil uses Google Trends to analyze the search interest level for veganism across the world.

The study uses big data to search for vegan-related words and phrases, such as “vegan restaurants” and “veganism”, which reached an all-time high in 2020.
The UK surpassed Australia to take the top the spot as more popular country for veganism, and the research also showed that veganism is twice as popular as it was five years ago.
“This south western English city has long been a center of alternative living,” says Chef’s Pencil.
“It has snatched the crown for top vegan city from Portland in 2018 and has remained on top for the third consecutive year.”

The research suggests that the coronavirus pandemic has had a large influence on the diet’s growth, with Chef’s Pencil saying: “The pandemic has not stopped the rise of veganism but has actually added a bit of fuel to its popularity.”
Searches for vegan recipes have increased, studies show that more vegan restaurants have opened than closed, and record sales of plant-based dishes have been sold.
Bristol’s food and drink scene continues to reflect the growth of veganism: Oowee Diner opened a new store, Oowee Vebab, in summer 2019, Suncraft on Gloucester Road and nearby Koocha on Zetland Road are both vegan and have opened in Bristol in the past two years.

Add to the list the already established vegan food and drink locations – from Gopal’s Curry Shack in Wapping Wharf and vegan deli and cafe Flip in Southville to vegan cake shop Earthcake and student-favourite Eat a Pitta – and it’s clear why Bristol has topped the list for the third consecutive year.
