Cabot Circus restaurant blames loss of cinema as one of reasons for closure

By Milan Perera  Friday May 17, 2024

The owners of a restaurant in Cabot Circus have announced they are closing its doors “after five wonderful years”, citing numerous factors including the closure of a nearby multiplex cinema.

Coal Kitchen, which also has branches in Exeter and Gloucester Quays, prides itself on its farm-to-table ethos and use of sustainably and locally produced ingredients, with a menu catered for all ages and occasions.

The team said the decision to close “has not been made lightly”, but a combination of rising costs, the Clean Air Zone and the cinema shutting down has made the location of the business unviable.

Next door, Showcase Cinema de Lux had been a focal point of the shopping centre since it opened in 2008 but in November 2023 Showcase announced it would be closing the city centre site “due to our inability to agree terms on a new lease with the landlords”.

In a statement, the owners of Coal Kitchen said: “We are saddened to announce that after five wonderful years, we have decided to close Coal Kitchen, Cabot Circus.

“This decision has not been made lightly, however as a family-owned restaurant, the last year operating in Cabot has been increasingly challenging with the introduction of the additional vehicle charges, soaring energy and food costs and the closure of Showcase cinema next to us.

“Unfortunately, this meant that we were unable to agree feasible terms with our landlord to make this a viable location.

“Although we wish we could continue, it is time to close our doors.

“We’ve had the best time in this amazing city and would like to thank our guests, suppliers, landlord, and team who have worked tirelessly to make Coal Kitchen rock.”

They added: “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We hope to see you again soon.”
