Having your cake and eating it on Chandos Road
Leanne Purton began making celebration cakes from her kitchen before moving into larger premises in Fishponds Trading Estate four years ago.
She has now opened new premises for her Pearly King business on Chandos Road in Redland, where she can both bake for her wholesale customers as well as selling to the public.
Pearly King remains as solely Leanne, whose clients now include the Arnolfini, Bristol Beer Factory, Emmeline on Cheltenham Road, Milk Teeth in St Paul’s, Este Kitchen in Easton and the Westbury Park pub.
is needed now More than ever

A selection of sweet treats currently on sale at Pearly King
“I’m making everything here now and I’m selling everything from here now,” Leanne explains while taking a break from making a particular large celebration cake.
If you’re walking by Pearly King (the name is a nod to the East End roots of Leanne’s family), you can buy cakes by the slice with a selection of both hot and cold drinks also able to take away.
With more space now than at Fishponds Trading Estate, Leanne can now also make more vegan, gluten-free and round cakes, as well as her staple of loaf cakes.
“I’ve already had lots of orders so far,” says Leanne. “The whole business has been built through word of mouth. I started with loaf cakes as that was the thing I could fit most of in the oven and loaf cakes are still the main thing that I do now.
“When these premises became available, I decided I was just going to go for it.”
