Casamia voted number one UK restaurant outside of London

By Carys Evans  Tuesday May 29, 2018

A popular Bristol restaurant has taken the top spot in SquareMeal’s annual ‘Top 100’ poll.

Casamia has been ranked number one in the leading restaurant guide’s best venues for 2018, voted for by thousands of readers, bloggers and local foodies. The restaurant has climbed 11 places since 2017.

SquareMeal’s Top 100 is the only poll to exclude London restaurants, allowing the UK’s regional dining scene to truly shine.

Casamia has risen 11 places since last year.

Speaking of the restaurant’s latest accolade, Casamia chef-patron Peter Sanchez-Iglesias said: “This is such an amazing achievement for the restaurant and especially important to put it out to the people that something special is going on in Bristol.

“It makes us really determined for the future that these awards can come with hard work and dedication by the team and that good things do come around.”

Established in 1999, Casamia serves a multi-course tasting menu, influenced by the individuality, multicultural and creative vibes of their home city of Bristol.

The restaurant is a family-run business with Peter in the kitchen, his dad Paco running front of house and mum Sue in charge of accounts.

Commenting on Casamia’s win, SquareMeal’s editor Ben McCormack said: ‘’With its 14-course tasting menu, space for just 35 diners, restricted opening hours and contemporary good looks, Casamia is everything you would expect from an ambitious destination restaurant in one of Britain’s most vibrant cities.

”Peter Sanchez-Iglesias is without doubt one of the country’s most creative chefs, but with his restaurant family now including tapas and pizza options next door, he is also one who instinctively knows that eating out is as much about enjoyment as invention.’’

This is not the first time the Bristol restaurant has received such recognition. Earlier this year, it was ranked second best restaurant in the UK in the prestigious Harden’s Best UK Restaurants 2018 list.

Chef Peter Sanchez-Iglesias was also named The UK’s best chef in The Good Food Guide 2018.

Good Food Guide editor Elizabeth Carter said: ‘’It seems fitting that such a vibrant foodie hotspot as Bristol should supply our latest chef of the year’’.
