How To Be A Chef returns to in-person teaching

By Lowie Trevena  Tuesday May 18, 2021

The How To Be A Chef course has begun teaching in-person again.

After a few false starts thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, Square Food Foundation has made a return to teaching six students how to be a chef in-person.

The course, run by the Square Food Foundation in partnership with Bristol24/7, supports young people to gain experience in the food and drink industry and supports them into future employment.

The current intake for the 12-week course was due to start in early 2021, but another lockdown changed plans, with the course starting online instead.

Hugo, Corey, Masie, Stephen, Hugo and Josh are the six young people taking on the latest course.

Through the course, they will learn the basics of cooking as well as some advanced techniques and recipes.

There will also be a range of workshops led by experts in food-related issues, cookery demonstrations and guest chefs.

Young people will also receive BTEC Level 2 qualification and a Level 2 Food & Hygiene certificate upon course competition.

Ordinarily, the young people would complete work experience in kitchens across the city, such as Windmill Hill City Farm’s cafe and Friska. However, the pandemic has meant that this is more difficult than usual.

Instead, they will also learn more general employability skills, meet a guest chef every Thursday afternoon and become part of Team Canteen once they finish the course in mid-July.

The project, which is part of Breaking Bread, is a fully equipped kitchen and events space that will host popups, fundraisers, and provide education and training opportunities.

The young people will work there for four weeks making meals for the community, helping create Breaking Bread’s ready meals and cook food for staff.

This course is for young people aged 16-25 who are not working or in full-time education or training, and anyone who is interested can register interest in taking part in September at www.squarefoodfoundation.co.uk/how-to-be-a-chef
