Huge roof terraces planned on top of former dockside warehouse
Unused space on top of a former dockside warehouse could provide roof terraces for three different bars.
V Shed encompasses the bar known as V Shed in the middle of Coyote Ugly and the soon-to-open Ritorno Lounge.
The building was constructed in 1924 and used to have three electric cranes on its flat roof.
is needed now More than ever
Once cleared of plant equipment that is currently there, the building’s owners hope to be able to create “a fabulous roof terrace complimenting the restaurants and bars below, promoting the rare views over the Harbour”.

The project’s aim according to Stride Treglown’s design & access statement “is to enhance the environment provided by the current building, to create a roof terrace with accessibility to views which promote appreciation of the Floating Harbour, the historic docks and wider built heritage”.
“This would generate a unique setting celebrating the waterfront location.
“The objective is to enhance the leisure environment, maintaining the existing uses, but transforming the experience, giving public access to fantastic views across the harbourside, whilst optimising the envelope of the current building and preserving the special character and appearance of the area.”

But Historic England‘s inspector of historic buildings and areas, Stephen Guy, has already objected to the planning application.
Guy says that the proposed development “will cause harm to key and historically important views of Bristol Cathedral and other highly graded heritage assets”.
His objection adds that proposed roof structures, some of which aim to hark back to the days of the cranes on the roof, “will impede and truncate key architectural elements of the Cathedral”.
