Hungarian cuisine comes to Clifton with new cafe

By Martin Booth  Monday Jun 24, 2019

Bristol has got another taste of Hungarian cuisine with a new cafe in Clifton.

Budapest Cafe has opened on Alma Vale Road, following in the footsteps of Deck Cafe on Gloucester Road which also has a menu inspired by the landlocked eastern European country.

On the counter of Budapest Cafe are the likes of sour cherry cake, apple pie and gerbeaud cake – a layered apricot and walnut cake, and a Hungarian delicacy – all made here in the small kitchen.

In what used to be the much-loved Mockingbird, there is still a reminder of their menu with Mississippi mud among the coffees, that are still made with Extract.

As well as mocktails, there are also four choices of another Hungarian speciality, homemade lemonade: blueberry, strawberry, raspberry and kiwi.

For £9.50, there is Hungary’s most famous dish, goulash, which is served here with sourdough bread; with Hungarian chorizo served in the sweet potato hash.

Less than a mile away from Clifton Suspension Bridge is a photo on one wall of Széchenyi Chain Bridge, Budapest’s own version, which spans the River Danube between Buda and Pest.
