Hunt is on for best South West drink & cheese

By Joanna Papageorgiou  Tuesday Nov 17, 2015

Molly Scott Cato, Green Party MEP for the South West, has launched a competition to identify some of our favourite products from across the region. The winners will get the opportunity to showcase their products at a special reception in Brussels early next year.

There are two categories in the competition and members of the public and small-scale producers are encouraged to nominate their favourite cheese or drinks beverage from the South West region.

The nominated cheese or beverage must be produced in the South West and should be distinctive to the region in some way.

Six local cheese producers and six beverage producers will be invited to attend the event in Brussels where they will get the opportunity to showcase their products to an audience of invited guests, network with other producers from the region, and meet with Dr Scott Cato to highlight any current issues or concerns.

Dr Scott Cato, who is a member of the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee, said: “I’m really proud to represent a region which is home to many rural communities and produces some of the best food in the world, and I’d like to showcase some of those products in Europe.

“I believe we need to move away from the industrialised and intensive farming systems that dominate the EU today. For several years the Green Group in Europe has been running a food campaign to encourage farming that serves the interests of communities rather than corporations and to ensure safe, healthy, sustainable and properly labelled food for consumers.

“Through this competition we hope to give some of those wonderful products that are produced in our beautiful region the opportunity to highlight their success and showcase their products to a wider audience.”

Nominations close on Thursday 26 November 26 at midday. For more information, visit www.mollymep.org.uk.
