Innovative cafe-laundrette to close

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Feb 7, 2023

The three sisters behind At the Well have announced “with great sadness” that they will be closing the business at the end of March.

In an emotional statement published on their social media channels, the Grist sisters – Ellen, Cassie and Lily – said that “with uncertainty over the future of the premises on top of economic challenges, we have had to evaluate our ability as a family to drive the business forward”.

The trio said that they would like the last two months of the innovative space on Cheltenham Road to end “on a high”.

“At The Well has demonstrated that a cafe-laundrette can be a fantastic community building enterprise and we’d love to see the concept replicated,” Ellen, Cassie and Lily wrote.

“The combination of a cafe and laundrette is widely appreciated, cherished by regulars, and generates considerable social-value for the wider community.

“Whilst this is a sad time for us, our staff team and our regular customers, we’re keen to have these last two months as a celebration of this fantastic journey and end this project on a high.

“It has been so much fun and we have loved growing and being part of such a vibrant community.”
