Retro cafe and bistro to close

By Milan Perera  Friday Aug 9, 2024

The owners of a unique cafe and bistro will be closing their current business to focus on an as-yet unannounced new venture.

Lucky Strike was opened on East Street in Bedminster in March 2023 by Tom Montgomery and Matt Nicholson, creating what they describe as “a neighbourhood spot that draws on nostalgia for cafe and bistro classics, set in a golden age of British interior design”.

Montgomery said that in recent months, the pair have thought about expanding but admitted that Lucky Strike may just be a “bit too niche” to ensure commercial success.

Montgomery said: “Unfortunately, although the restaurant made a modest profit since we opened the restaurant, that’s only if Matt, the chef and I work every service and weekend. So, it’s been unpredictable here.

“And twice in the last nine months, we’ve been on the verge of expanding the team, as we’ve been so busy, only to see revenue fall away again.

“And it’s reached a point where the stretch in our lives is a bit too much.”

Montgomery thanked their loyal customers but added: “I think our concept was a bit too niche and not as commercial as we’d hoped.

“But qualitatively, I think it’s been a success. And we’re thrilled with the reviews we’ve had.”

But it is the curtain call for Lucky Strike as the final brunch will be served on September 1.

Montgomery hinted of a next project with a “new cuisine” and said “will look forward to telling about it in due course”.
