Mother and son open new deli
The owners of a new deli specialising in smoked and cured meats hope their “unconventional” shop off the beaten track in Clifton proves a success.
For more than 40 years, Root & Ember on Bruton Place just off Park Place was Mr Swanton’s barbershop. The site was also previously a toyshop.
Root & Ember has been opened by mother and son team Freddie and Jane Jago, with former teaching assistant Freddie moving to Bristol from Parsons Green in south west London to live above the shop.
is needed now More than ever
“Curing and smoking meat is something that I love doing,” Freddie said. “Our whole family really enjoys eating it so I thought, why not try to open a shop?
“This is about organic, unconventional and exciting things that you rarely find in other places.”

Down a flight of stairs is the cellar where Freddie does the smoking in both hot and cold Bradley smokers.
There is also what he describes as a “space age” curing cabinet which can be controlled via Bluetooth.
You can find the fruits of Freddie’s labours in the fridges on the shop floor where there is currently smoked duck and smoked chicken for sale, with venison soon also to be on the menu.
