Chocolate shop and café opens on Park Street

By Lydia Burns  Thursday Sep 14, 2017

When you step inside Mrs Potts Chocolate House, you’re met by brownies, cookies, cakes and melted chocolate dipping pots waiting for strawberries, bananas and marshmallows. It’s a sweet-toothed dream come true, wrapped up with a bow.

Michael and Jennifer Potts hail from Australia, and recently moved to Bristol to set up their chocolate house – a pretty little café at the bottom of Park Street (formerly The Tea Birds). It’s filled with cocoa goodies, just waiting to be tasted.

The eponymous Mrs Potts, Jennifer, had always wanted to set up a café, so roped in husband Michael, previously in finance, and their daughter, who has studied food nutrition.

“There are many places like this in Australia but they don’t seem to be many here,” Jennifer explained. “In the evenings, you might want to go somewhere different and cosy, and Bristol seems to be lacking in this area.” As such, the cafe is open until 11pm over the weekends, which creates a lovely alternative for those who want a quiet evening and don’t fancy an alcoholic drink.

There are plenty of places to go for a drink, or a meal but sometimes you might just want to have a roasted white hot chocolate with a sugar coated doughnut.

The café is working with local businesses like Guilbert’s Chocolates and Wogan Coffee. “Bristol has an impressive history in chocolate and a bustling coffee scene, so we are delighted to be working with a high calibre of local suppliers,” Michael says.

“Mrs Potts Chocolate House will be a unique experience which will leave our customers with the happy, warm feeling we all get when enjoying chocolate.”

The cafe sells all sorts of sweet treats, to take away and eat in all day and evening

The couple have taken the time to make sure the chocolate house is as welcoming and inviting as possible, with a large window that floods the room with light and two delightful olive trees outside. There is a small basin so you can wash your hands if they get sticky with brownie or the cloud-like homemade marshmallows.

Many drinks will be available includin, white, milk and dark hot chocolates from £3, a speciality Aztec recipe hot chocolate at £3.50 and a chocolate chai at £3, all mixed with whole, soya or almond milk.

Cakes, cookies and tarts start from £1.50, and their speciality melting pots, with strawberries or bananas, start from £4.90 for an individual portion.
