By Milan Perera  Friday Aug 23, 2024

A bakery that has been a mainstay in Bristol for more than a century is getting new owners.

Since 1990, Joe’s Bakery on Gloucester Road has been owned by Martin Hunt who is now selling the business to two members of his staff.

Joe’s Bakery, which won the title of Britain’s Best Loaf in 2021 for its prune and cardamom sourdough bread, have their main hub next to the Golden Lion and a second store at 45 Gloucester Road.

The bakery will be sold to Wayne Thick and Jenny Rogers, who are hoping to take Hunt’s vision to the level.

Thick joined the firm back in 1997 as a 16-year-old general helper. After earning his stripes and acquiring new skills along the way, he became the store manager in 2016.

Rogers joined Joe’s in 2006, after being introduced by her grandfather who himself worked for the firm for years. Advancing through the ranks, she is now both a director and a shareholder.
