New bakery opens in Redfield

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Jun 13, 2017

There may not yet be a sign above the door, but the smell of freshly baked bread in the morning is a sure sign of the location of Bristol’s newest bakery.

The Bristol Loaf on Church Road in Redfield is owned by Alex Collier and Gary Derham, formerly of The Assembly Bakery in Old Market.

“I’m really excited,” said one customer, her baby strapped to her front in a sling as she bought a white sourdough loaf.

“I only live down the road,” she continued. “This area desperately needed this.”

As she left, three buggies were pushed onto the bare concrete floor inside, as a group of friends chatted on the large communal table.

The open-plan bakery

There was a queue out of the door on Saturday for the first day of opening, and people are still literally stopping in their tracks as they notice that a new bakery has opened in their neighbourhood, including one lady with a Greggs bag from next door who very much seems to now regret her decision.

It’s certainly giving a run for its money to the nearby Southville Deli, who buy in their loaves from Herbert’s in Montpelier.

The bakery area here can be glimpsed in the back of this unit that most recently was NatWest bank. Tins, bowls and trays balanced on top of each other signify that the morning’s hard work is already completed.

Today’s bread is a white sourdough (£3.40), wholemeal sourdough (£3.40) and seeded rye (£3.80), with focaccia always available on a Saturday.

On the counter are a courgette, lemon and rosemary cake (£3), gooseberry financiers (£1.50), gluten-free brownies (£2.50), chocolate chip cookies (£1.20), pain au chocolat (£1.80), almond croissant (£2.20), ham and cheese croissant (£2.20) and small squares of shortbread for 75p.

Chalked up on the blackboard behind the counter and above bags of Extract coffee beans and a few bottles of wine (ready to be served continental-style in carafes) are the lunch options of pizza from £3.80 for a margarita, and toasties from £3.80 for gruyere and cheddar.

Follow your nose to The Bristol Loaf, another string in our city’s doughy bow.
