New cocktail bar promises ‘the wow factor’

By Martin Booth  Friday Aug 21, 2020

The new owner of a popular cocktail bar has given it a new lease of life as it prepares to open its doors for the first time on Friday.

The Dirty Bird in Clifton Village is owned by Bristol businessman Rhys Thickett, who promises that it “will definitely have the wow factor”.

On the site on King’s Road that was previously Amoeba, the new bar will specialise in gins and use as many local suppliers as possible.

Drinks will be made by mixologist Jackson Priest, who has run cocktail bars in New Zealand and Australia.

Set over three floors and with its own private garden, Thickett hopes to continue the popularity of Amoeba, which had operated for almost two decades.

“Amoeba had become a Clifton institution over the past 18 years and I have carried this forward with a complete refurbishment and the creation of a new highly distinctive image which will definitely have the wow factor,” Thickett said.

“A lot of people, including himself, were saddened by the closure of this favourite watering hole after so many years.

“It had become an integral part of the fabric of the community so I decided to take it on and hopefully give it new lease of life for the next 18 years.”
