New diner ‘mashup of Scottish-Aussie breakfast scene’
A new diner takes inspiration from the backgrounds of its Scottish and Aussie co-founders.
Hotplate Diner, the latest venture from Left Handed Giant, has opened on Stokes Croft serving breakfast, brunch, burgers, coffee, tea, milkshakes, cocktails and beer.
Left Handed Giant co-founder Bruce Gray told Bristol24/7 that the diner’s menu is a “real mashup of the Scottish-Aussie breakfast scene” from his own Scottish background and business partner Jack Granger’s Aussie roots.
is needed now More than ever
Gray hopes that the latest LHG business will settle in well within Stokes Croft, in what he calls an “amazing location”.
Hotplate Diner is located behind the remaining façade of the Grade II*-listed Carriageworks building, designed in 1862 by acclaimed Bristol architect Edward Godwin.
Within a site that has been empty for decades, the LHG team are also set to take on the unit on the other side of the central archway alongside Pizza Is Lovely, with the two businesses already working together at LHG’s brewpub in Finzels Reach and Renato’s on King Street.

During a recent test opening, tables were already packed at Hotplate Diner.
The huge windows of the Carriageworks arches which were originally open to allow access by Perry’s carriages now allow natural light to flow through the open plan space.
From an aesthetic perspective, Hotplate Diner is beautiful, with the light wood interior and kitchen counters crafted by fellow Stokes Croft business, Woodstock.
“I’m super proud,” Gray says. “It’s been a really enjoyable journey.”
