New Indian restaurant opening from chef with global experience

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jul 11, 2024

A couple are opening a new Indian restaurant in the Bristol neighbourhood that they call home.

The Pukka Peacock will be opened in a former butchers in Brislington by Dhayalan Paul and Saritha Thomas.

Paul played cricket to a high standard in India before becoming a professional chef and has since worked all over the world.

He rose through the ranks from chef-de-partie at the Cinnamon Club in London to become group executive chef of the Mint Leaf Group, before returning to India and then heading back to the UK to continue his consultancy work with the likes of Khai Khai in Newcastle and Pataka in Soho.

“We’ve had a truck load of challenges along the way, failures and successes alike, but the dreams are always alive, as has been this one, of starting our own family-run restaurant,” said Thomas.

“Living here in Brislington since November 2022, we’ve grown to love our neighbourhood and our community.

“The people and friendships formed in such quick time has been life affirming.

“And then it dawned on us: let’s launch the Pukka Peacock right here, on our own high street; let’s share this dream with our community and the place we now call home.”

Paul and Thomas recently hosted a successful Pukka Peacock pop-up at the Sundial Kitchen in Totterdown.

When it opens on Sandy Park Road, the Pukka Peacock will be a 20-cover restaurant that will serve what Paul and Thomas promise will be “home-style, flavourful Indian food, with added inspiration from Dhayalan’s cooking experiences across the world in India, UAE and the UK”.

“The plan is, lunches and dinners on weekdays and a fun and delightful brunch on Sundays.

“With fresh, locally sourced produce and a seasonal menu, changing every fortnight, we hope to invite guests back, as often as they can come.”
