Origin opens its first cafe in Bristol

By Martin Booth  Friday Sep 29, 2023

A new cafe has been designed to be a community space which is able to host events and brewing courses as well as being a place to enjoy speciality coffee.

Porthleven coffee roaster Origin have chosen Bristol to open their first cafe outside of Cornwall and London.

Origin previously had a pop-up within the Finisterre shop on Park Street and count cafes including Society as wholesale customers.

In what used to be Friska on Victoria Street, the Origin cafe has been designed to have a “sophisticated industrial aesthetic” with a handmade terracotta floor, natural Devon lime plaster walls and coffee cups made by Falmouth-based ceramicist Sam Marks.

Coffee is divided into black, white and filter. Pastries baked by Mokoko the other side of Temple Meads are on display in a glass case.

If it’s black you’re after, it’s £3 for an espresso, long black or americano; if you prefer your drink with milk it’s £3.60 for a flat white, latte or cortado; or from the filter options, choose a batch brew for £3, cold brew for £3.80 or pour-over for £4.50.

If you want to learn how to make better coffee at home, a training room that can be seen through big windows behind the bar will from the new year be the place to perfect your pour-over or learn about latte art.

“Bristol is a big move for us but we’re really excited to finally open our doors,” said Origin owner and founder, Tom Sobey.

“It’s our first cafe outside of London and Cornwall and this city feels like the perfect place to open.

“We love to be surrounded by likeminded, sustainably conscious businesses and people.

“As well as creating a beautiful coffee shop for the Bristol community to enjoy, our new site will act as an education and technical hub, allowing us to offer a great level of service to our wholesale customers in the West.”
