Restaurants unite to tackle homelessness

By Karen Johnson  Tuesday Oct 8, 2024

Ahead of the holiday season, several new restaurants have signed up with StreetSmart to gift hope to the homeless.

Since 1998, participating restaurants at StreetSmart have added a voluntary £1 to diner bills during the festive months of November and December, with each pound collected donated towards those forced to battle winters on the streets.

Six restaurants from across the city have pledged support, with new openings Dongnae and Bombil also making it on the list.

StreetSmart cross the £1m mark in raising money for homelessness charities in 2023

Other new participants include the much-loved chain of Indian restaurants – Nutmeg, Nutmeg Street Kitchen, Nadu and Kal Dosa.

Tessa Lidstone from Box E, one of the restaurants long associated with the cause believes the donation made goes from “strength to strength”.

She said: “This will be our ninth year supporting StreetSmart and it just goes from strength to strength.

“It’s great for diners to know that every single penny of the £1 that’s on their bill goes directly to local homelessness projects, like Caring in Bristol’s amazing new stepping-stone accommodation, which would not have been possible without funding like this.

“Last year Bristol diners and restaurants collectively raised £17,000. Let’s see if we can smash that target this year.”

Through the years, the cause has received blinding support from Bristol restaurants with 23 restaurants joined in at the moment.

Last year the whopping £17,000 collected benefited the charities Caring in Bristol and Help Bristol’s Homeless.

In 2024, the charity Cheltenham Open Door will also benefit from money earned through the participating restaurants.
