Sri Lankan restaurant to open on Stokes Croft

By Lowie Trevena  Monday Nov 16, 2020

Opening in what was most recently Masa + Mezcal, a new Sri Lankan restaurant hopes to bring influences from both Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, the southernmost state of India, to Stokes Croft.

Nadu is the latest opening from Bristol restaurateur Raja Munuswamy, who opened Indian restaurant Nutmeg in Clifton in 2016.

With a kitchen led by executive chef Saravanan Nambirajan, the restaurant is inspired by Raja and Saravanan’s Tamil heritage.

“Nadu” means “land” or “place” in Tamil and the pair promise to bring the “flavours and spirit” of the culture to Bristol.

“We’re very excited to be bringing the food and drink of our ‘nadu’ to Bristol and look forward to sharing dishes from our childhoods including bone marrow curry, spring hoppers, coconut stew and – above all else – the share and tear dosa,” says Raja.

“It’s definitely been a new challenge to open a new business in the middle of a pandemic, but we’ve been supported by a fantastic team to help us pull it off and we can’t wait to bring something new and exciting to Bristol’s vibrant food scene.”

Tamil food is based on the concept that food shapes the personality and mood. Nadu’s menu has been created by Saravanan with this ethos in mind.

Food will be cooked using local ingredients and the menu will include a range of vegetarian and vegan dishes alongside fish and meat.

Nadu will open on Friday, December 4.
