Team behind much-loved cafe open new kitchen/bar in Easton

By Ellie Pipe  Tuesday Jun 22, 2021

It’s been a labour of love for the owners of The Garden of Easton, who have finally thrown open the doors to the new kitchen/bar.

Transformation of the St Mark’s Road premises that was most recently home to Maitreya Social has been years in the making for Anna Swift and James Marshall, who have done all of the work themselves from scratch.

From crafting the roof to making tables and growing an abundance of plants from seed, the team behind the Bristolian on Picton Street have pulled out all the stops on their new venture.

They were set to open the kitchen/bar just as the pandemic struck, setting their plans back by another 18 months.

Now finally open, Anna says it has been a challenging time trying to launch a new business during a pandemic but also fun to work on a brand new concept.

“It’s been a labour of love,” says Anna, who worked at the restaurant when it was Maitreya some years ago.

“We live just down the road from it and we heard it was going and saw the potential there,” she explains.

The Garden of Easton offers breakfasts and lunches, as well as an evening menu of fusion small plates and cocktails.

“We chose small plates so we could mix it up,” says Anna. “It’s mostly vegan with a few vegetarian and meat dishes – it means we can have a few good quality, locally sourced meats and mix things up.

“Bristol is so good for that, there are so many great local suppliers.”

The team have worked to ensure The Garden of Easton offers something a bit different. “We have put so much effort into thinking up each dish and cooking and recooking each one,” says Anna, worked on the festival circuit for years before opening the Bristolian at the end of 2012.
