Windmill Hill City Farm launches veg box scheme with a difference
Windmill Hill City Farm and the Land Workers’ Alliance have set up a new veg box scheme that aims to tackle growing food insecurity.
The two organisations have devised the scheme to be accessible and open to all so that everyone in the city can benefit from fresh produce.
The boxes are priced on a sliding scale in a bid to make it affordable for everyone, with customers able to choose a standard or low-cost food box, depending on their income and circumstances.

There is also the option to buy a solidarity box, the cost of which contributes toward another box for a household in need, or a ‘pay it forward’ box, which will be given to someone in need for free.
The aim is to provide free and low-cost veg boxes to households at risk of food insecurity. But it will rely on the general public’s support.
“The success of the scheme depends entirely on whether or not we can sell enough pay it forward and solidarity boxes,” explains Anna, the cafe manager at Windmill Hill City Farm.
“We’re confident we can get the public behind the idea to support others in need in their community. And of course, it’s the perfect time of year to buy from your local city farm as all the best and tastiest food is coming up for harvest.
“Provided the scheme is a success we’re hoping that we can grow it further when we have the gardens up and running at Hartcliffe City Farm.
“We aim to improve people’s access to good food that may be experiencing food insecurity. We also want to encourage people to buy local, fresh produce grown without chemicals and food miles.”
