A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: The Lazy Dog, Ashley Down
It was just past 4pm when the Lazy Dog had opened for the evening. Outside was empty and spacious, but slightly breezy to sit outside as the weary walker went in.
The left hand side of the pub was equipped with three self contained pods with stained glass partitions, providing a glimpse to its past.
The cushioned seating looked comfortable and the furniture looked sturdy giving an overall vibe of comfort and cosiness.

But alas, every single table was reserved and the weary walker came to an unreserved area near the front door. It was both a blessing and a minor irritation as you met the gaze of each patron as they entered the pub.
The selection of tipples on offer was commendable with a nod to many local breweries such as the Bristol Beer Factory.
Thinking of a pint of Exhibitionist, after feeling slightly adventurous, one suddenly noticed the familiar sight of Lazer Juice. The friendly member of bar staff was not irritated by the change of hearts and reassured the patron of its merits. The pint pushed you back £4.99 and it was too early to order food.

A large black and white photograph print caught your attention – an early iteration of the Lazy Dog; namely the Ashley Inn.
Today’s pub boasts its origins to the late Victorian period. The photograph was populated with what looked like the set of The Godfather Part II as they stare at you with a penetrating look in their Sunday best.
The noticeboard next to the black and white print told a story of a busy pub schedule; a film club, pub quiz and comedy nights.

On the left hand side of the bar, one could not help but notice the behemoth of a board with their menu which is a homage to British pub grub with no frills.
As the evening progressed, there was a steady stream of patrons, mainly tradesmen, still in their cement-caked overalls. Some of them acknowledged you with a friendly gaze while others going one step further with an “Alright mate?”

As the weary walker took his leave, the place was buzzing with activities; changing barrels, sizzling food plates making their way to the table and more people at the bar.
One could not help but notice that it is located within a walking distance from the Seat Unique Stadium on Nevil Road, the home of Gloucester Cricket Club.
And one wonders if this isn’t a gem of a pub for a post-match celebration or consolation drink come the start of the next cricket season.
