A-Z Bristol pub crawl: The Coronation, Southville
A bedraggled cyclist hurried into the Coronation on a Thursday evening as torrential rain poured down outside.
She was enveloped with warmth as she peeled off layers of soaked-through cycling gear and cosied up in one of the pub’s many cosy corner seats.
This welcoming boozer in Southville is everything you want from a local pub. Its walls are lined with charming and witty trinkets, and our very own prime minister even makes an – albeit slightly rude – appearance.
is needed now More than ever
The Coronation, known as the Corrie to locals, has become a bit of an institution, and in doing so has become a melting pot for university graduates who have made their way to the other side of the river, settling down in the wholesome family-orientated postcode of Southville, as well as those from further afield.

The bar boasts a wonderful selection of local brews like Lost and Grounded’s ‘Keller Pills’, Bristol Beer Factory’s ‘Infinity’ and St Austel’s ‘Southville Session’ lager, as well as a lively house terrapin, which occupies a fish tank at the back of the bar.
Despite spring being firmly upon us, the girl opted for a mulled wine, which was on offer along with hot toddies, perhaps in an effort to upsell the final dregs of the winter beverages.
The Corrie is the perfect pub to nestle into away from the rain, with an impressive selection of board games, delicious Sunday roasts and competitive quiz nights on a Monday evening.
There’s also great vegan options, live entertainment, sports broadcasting and an eclectic collection of Upfest-style murals – perhaps an ode to the hugely popular local festival.
While dogs are welcome, they will have to get past the pub cat, who sits on the bar, swishing its tail as it judges the canine clientele who enter its premises.

The Upfest-style murals have been painted onto dividers that were installed during the pandemic
In the summer, the Coronation’s beer garden would spill out across the street, bringing a continental feel to the institution, as punters enjoyed aperol spritz and pints in the evening sun.
It also played host to the Kingston Street party in July, a buzzing street fair with a big family barbeque and live music.
However the council has since revoked this licence for an outside seating area, a hangover from Covid that has impacted many of Bristol pubs and bars who made the most of the empty streets during the pandemic.
The pub remains hopeful its outdoor seating will return, and meanwhile, punters can enjoy the welcoming atmosphere and community-feel of this local institution.
