A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: The Mouse, Westbury-on-Trym

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Oct 30, 2024

It’s the end of an era at the Mouse.

After 21 years at the pub in Westbury-on-Trym, landlords Billy and Elaine Monaghan will be calling last orders for the final time on November 10.

The following day, the keys will be handed over to new custodians, Izzy and Hannah, with Elaine writing in a Facebook post that “we feel the time is right for us to leave”.

On a recent evening after work, a visitor to the Mouse locked his bike on some scaffolding poles outside the next door Westbury-on-Trym Village Hall.

“You can’t park there, mate,” a familiar voice said.

It was a friend who had just moved down the road and who was already on first name terms with Elaine, Billy and what seemed like everyone else who was currently inside the pub.

Once called the Royal Oak, what is now the Mouse is well known for its beer garden with panoramic views across north Bristol.

The pub is also popular for live sport, although that was a moot point on this recent visit with the Sky box out of action.

Responding to Elaine’s post on Facebook, one regular praised the pub’s “amazing community”.

Another comment said: “You will be missed and so will your ploughman’s lunch and chilli con carne!”

After enjoying a bottle of Thatchers Zero, the visitor who had locked his bike to the scaffolding pole had to cycle back home before it got dark, as the sun also sets on Billy and Elaine’s time at the Mouse after more than two decades.
