A-Z Bristol pub crawl: The Trident, Emersons Green

By Mia Vines Booth  Sunday Feb 25, 2024

Four friends parked up at the Trident pub in Emersons Green on a recent Sunday afternoon.

The ‘club-house’ style building was more akin to a cricket pavilion than a pub, with a large car park, small playground, and outdoor seating area, looked over by the England flag.

The Trident, built in the 1960s, changed its name briefly to the Leap, before returning to its previous name.

The barman, who could have been the publican, rushed to the door as they entered, leading them to the bar where he served them pints of Birra Morreti and Guinness on tap.

It may have been quiet that Sunday, but the Trident isn’t short of activities to entice the locals

Nearby four men played a competitive game of darts, that consisted of expletives and raised voices of disagreement.

As it was a quiet Sunday – and the four friends had no change between them – the publican kindly allowed them to play a game of pool for free, looked over by an impressive clock made out of pool balls. One game turned into two, turned into three.

Soon the locals were gathering around and a wave of suspense fell over the room as they took the final shot to pot the black.

It may have been quiet that Sunday, but the Trident isn’t short of activities to entice the locals, including said pool and darts, live sports, Fruity machines, and Karaoke with the elusive “Anushka”.

There’s also a Port bomb machine, which almost immediately caught the attention of the four friends, who made a bet which saw the losing pool team buy the winners a shot. If you’re looking slightly less sweet than a Jaegerbomb and slightly more classy, ask your local pub to by itself a Port bomb machine.

According to locals a Meat Machine van parks on the premises every Saturday selling cuts of meats, and a ‘Burger Bus’ drops in every now and again.

The Trident is a ‘no frills’ that has been serving locals for 60 years, and one can only hope the locals’ love of tense dart games and live sports will sustain it for another 60 years.
