A-Z Pub Crawl: The Queen’s Head, Eastville
Two men sit at a table in the vast expanse of the Queen’s Head in Eastville on a Thursday evening.
They are debating over what pub they should watch the football at this weekend while they wait to be joined by another woman.
Stories abound about this sizeable pub on Fishponds Road in Eastville, so much so that there is a whole Reddit column devoted to its heyday.
is needed now More than ever
According to locals, the pub used to serve £3 roasts, the pool tables were free and the landlord used to let everyone put their drinks on a tab and settle up at the end of the week.
There were also rumours that the pub was going to be turned into a bed and breakfast or an Indian at one point.

Two pool tables beckon punters in
Now owned by Greene King, the Queen’s Head is a former Hall’s Oxford & West Brewery Company pub, with their sign with a hare on still by the door.
The pub dates back to the late nineteenth century with yellow and red brickwork and ornate stained glass windows, and sits opposite the lush greenery of Eastville Park.
A large beer garden and two pool tables are still in use at the pub, with two white balls on the table beckoning punters to play a game, and the drinks are still the “cheapest in Fishponds”, at £4 for a pint of Birra Moretti. Blackthorne and Natch Cider are the regular orders here. At Happy Hour, pints start at £3.50.
A circular bar in the middle could theoretically serve punters on all sides, but tonight owner John is serving the two gentleman in one corner, who every now and again can be heard saying “same again, John”.
I finish my pint and leave John with his regulars, knowing they’ll be left in good hands.
