Bristol Spirit announced as home of Classic Album Sundays

By Victoria Rose  Thursday Jun 7, 2018

Independent neighbourhood bar Bristol Spirit has been chosen as the Bristol home of Classic Album Sundays, an organisation of music lovers who put on monthly album-listening events in locations worldwide. Bristol Spirit, co-owned by friends by Sam Espensen and Phil Gillies, will be joining 14 other venues in cities around the world including London, New York and Sydney.

Things will kick off here in Bristol from Sunday July 1, with a event featuring a play-through of Mezzanine by Massive Attack.  The event will begin with a short talk by a special guest, then the whole album will be played followed by a brief Q&A to end.  Founder of Classic Album Sundays, Colleen Murphy, says that it will be an experience for music lovers: “Fans are able to immerse themselves into an album that has helped shape our culture and in some cases, our lives.”

Bristol Spirit is a busy local bar that serves Espensen Spirit, infused liquors created by co-owner Sam Espensen

Local hi-fi retailer Audio T will be ensuring that an excellent sound system is provided for the best possible listening experience.  The Classic Album Sundays programme will be co-curated by  Sam Espensen and music journalist Laura Williams.

Sam Espensen, founder of Bristol Spirit, said: “Bristol has and always will be driven and moulded by music and its influence resonates throughout the world. The buccaneering attitude of the locals is heavily responsible for the city’s musical heritage.”

She also said she was delighted to be kicking off with an album by Massive Attack, adding: “What better place to start our Classic Album Sundays programme than with Mezzanine?”

Bristol Spirit is already well known for its musical connections, and has hosted other events celebrating the UK’s fantastic music scene, including Sunday Soul Lunches and a Bowie-themed brunch.

Tickets for the first event on July 1 cost £6 and can be purchased at www.espensenspirit.com/collections/all-products/classic-album-sundays-mezzanine-1st-july
