Pub of the Week: The Quadrant
“Let’s go to the pub!” shouts a grey-haired man in a leather jacket midway through a loud anecdote on one table at the Quadrant.
His three friends laugh uproariously and it got a man sat on a stool at the bar thinking: should this Clifton Village business be classified as a pub or a bar?
The Quadrant, situated within a distinctive curved building on the corner of Princess Victoria Street and Regent Street since as early as 1866, call themselves “Bristol’s premier cafe and wine bar”.
is needed now More than ever
It has long been associated with wine, with the Latin phrase ‘in vino veritas’ once over its front door.

In recent months, two wine bars in Bristol – The Library and Bar Buvette – have closed down, but two new wine bars are due to open soon on North Street and in Finzels Reach.
So there is certainly still appetite for wine in the city, and the Quadrant’s downstairs cellar bar is a haven for wine lovers with dozens of bottles to choose from, many of which are available to drink by the glass.
A weekly quiz night takes place here and there are regular wine tasting events.
Upstairs on a recent Thursday evening, three cask ales, a trio of Bath Ales beers – Prophecy, Gem and Forest Hare – were on tap, but the Forest Hare hoppy autumn ale was not in the best condition.
The beer drinker at the bar should have stuck to the 30-strong wine list or chosen from one of the half a dozen cocktails written on a peg letter board.
If you fancy going to the pub soon, don’t forget about Bristol’s wine bars.
