Pub of the Week: Leveret
“It symbolises new life, rebirth, a new beginning.”
The landlord of Leveret is explaining the change of name of this North Street pub which up until recently was the Hare.
Keen naturalists will know that a leveret is in fact a baby hare, so the name is not too much of a departure.
is needed now More than ever
It’s also had a lick of paint since its previous incarnation, and now describes itself as a ‘cask house’ rather than a pub – probably not a moniker that will catch on.
The cask selections here aren’t just on the pump clips, but also on a small printed menu on each table.
Currently they consist exclusively of beers from Wrington’s Twisted Oak: Leveret bitter (first brewed in collaboration with the Hare), Sheriff Farman amber ale and Slippery Slope porter.

A leveret? Or a hare?
An IPA from Hackney microbrewery Crate is the pick of the options on keg, alongside the likes of Mortimers Orchard cider, and lagers Southern Gothic from California’s Sierra Nevada and Kaltenberg from Germany.
There are also a dozen bottled beers, four beers in cans, wine by the glass or bottle, and a well-stocked back bar including 16 different gins.
“She’ll be here every day,” a 30-something woman with curly red hair says, pointing to her companion as they order their drinks.
They are just two of half a dozen customers who walk in at the same time soon before 7pm on Friday night.
“It looks completely different,” one of the group says as he looks around him, the smell of paint still lingering in the air.
“Same great beer,” says the landlord. “Just a little bit more swanky.”
